Art
At Whiston Worrygoose, we believe that Art is a vital and enriching part of every child’s education. Our Art curriculum aims to inspire creativity, self-expression and confidence, enabling children to communicate their ideas, feelings and understanding of the world around them in unique and imaginative ways.
We encourage our learners to explore a wide range of media, techniques and artistic styles, developing their skills progressively as they move through school. Through studying the work of artists, designers and craftspeople from diverse backgrounds and cultures, children gain an appreciation of how art reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the culture and creativity of our nation and the wider world.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for experimentation, reflection and celebration. Children are encouraged to take creative risks, learn from mistakes and develop perseverance and pride in their work. We aim to ensure that every pupil at Whiston Worrygoose leaves with the confidence to express themselves visually, the curiosity to keep exploring art in all its forms, and the understanding that creativity is a powerful force for personal growth and positive change.

INTENT
Our goal is to captivate, motivate, and challenge every student, giving them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, innovate, and craft their own artistic expressions, both in traditional and contemporary forms. As the children advance, they will be able to critically think and foster a deeper comprehension of art and design. They will also recognise how art and design influence and are influenced by our history, Enhancing the cultural diversity and prosperity of our society.
Our commitment is to fulfil the objectives of the National Curriculum for art and design, ensuring that all the children are able to create their own pieces using their skills and concepts they have learnt, as well as document this in sketchbooks. The children will master drawing, painting, sculpture, and various other artistic techniques. Each year, they will assess and interpret creative endeavours using the vocabulary of art, craft, and design. Furthermore, students will learn about artists, craftspeople, and designers, gaining insight into the historical and cultural evolution of different art forms.
IMPLEMENTATION
We follow our Art Curriculum document which contains specific skills needed for each year to progress to becoming an Artist who has a bank of skills and knowledge needed for many art forms. We plan for Art based using the National Curriculum objectives. Our Art concepts include Line, Tone, Shape and Form, Texture, Colour and Pattern.
Throughout School the children will cover these concepts through the use of sketchbooks to practice their skills, and then implementing those skills to make a final piece. For the children’s final pieces we are planning to hold exhibitions throughout the year to give pupils and a chance to showcase their fantastic artwork to their friends, family and community.
IMPACT
Outcomes in Art and the children’s sketchbooks will evidence a broad and creative Art curriculum and demonstrate the children’s skills and knowledge which they have learnt and developed. As children progress throughout our school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding and appreciation of lots of different forms of Art and different artists. We will be hosting Art exhibitions to showcase the children’s final artwork pieces and to show how they have implanted their knowledge and skills to create final pieces. We assess Art through the use of sketchbooks to see their development of skills and how they choose to implement these. We measure our impact based on the pupils’ sketchbook work and their confidence to ask and explore questions to further their own Art knowledge and understanding. We aspire for our children to leave our school being Artists who are able to produce beautiful and imaginative pieces of Art. By the end of their primary education at Whiston Worrygoose, our learners will have gained a rich body of Art knowledge and a wide range of skills.
